August 8, 2009:  Rubber Ducky Race

Location:  Chestnut Creek, Galax, VA

Time:  10:00 a.m. until completed.

Event:  Old Time Fiddlers Convention August 3-8, 2009.

All Rubber Ducks are serial numbered on the bottom.  A list is maintained of each purchaser and their duck's serial number.  The winner is determined by the rubber ducky that first crosses the finish line on Chestnut Creek on Saturday, August 8, 2009 during the annual Old Time Fiddlers Convention at Felts Park in the City of Galax.  The race starts at 10:00 a.m. rain or shine and may take as much as 2 to 3 hours to run the course.

July 11, 2009:  Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament

Location:  Galax Municipal Golf Course.

Time:  8:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m.

Event:  Captain's Choice Golf Tournament

Team of Four entry fee is $50 per golfer or $200 per team.  Team entry fee includes:  Green Fees, Cart, Lunch & Awards Dinner.

Team Prizes:  1st =  $300, 2nd = $200, 3rd = $100.

Individual Prizes:  Hole-in-one on #18 wins a new Ford Ranger pickup sponsored by Twin County Ford Mercury

Monday, May 25, 2009, Memorial Day:  Elks Lodge #2212 acknowledged their support for the Veterans Memorial by presenting a check for $500 towards the memorial construction.  Bobby Fender, District Deputy Designate GER and Bill Mathieu, Exalted Ruler of Galax Elks Lodge #2212 made the presentation to Sharon Plichta, Fundraising Chairman, on Memorial Day during the annual flag raising ceremony at the Elks Lodge.

May 25, 2009:  Groundbreaking Ceremony

Location:  Galax Public Library

Time:  10:00 a.m.

All area veterans and the general public is invited to the Veterans Memorial Groundbreaking.

March 10, 2009:  Benefit Contract Bridge Game

Location:  Galax Recreation Center

Time:  1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Donation:  $10 per player.  Bring your partner or come alone and find a partner at the game.

Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.  Door
Prizes.

Refreshments:  Dessert and Coffee.

November 1, 2008:  Veterans Memorial Auction

Location:  Mt. Vale United Methodist Church Pettigrew Center

3350 Meadow Creek Road, Galax, VA.  Take highway 89 south of Galax to Mt. Vale Road.  Turn right on Mt. Vale Road and travel 1 mile to Mt. Vale Church.

Time:  11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Event:  Chili, baked potato, desert and drink $6.00

Music by Mt. Vale Quartet and a Bluegrass Band

Location:  Chestnut Creek (Grayson Street Bridge to the New River State Park)

Time:  10:00 a.m. (Start Time)

Purchase your military rubber ducks at any Veterans Memorial public display.  Army, Marine, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard rubber ducks are available for a donation of $5.  Mail your name, address, phone number and email address along with your donation to Veterans Memorial P.O. Box 1023, Galax, VA 24333.

 4th Annual Car Show.

Ed Paisley looks on as Rex Roberts displays an "Honor Paver" in front of the memorial mockup of a black granite monolithe.  The "Honor Pavers" are 5" X 10" granite pavers that may be engraved with a message honoring our veterans or it may contain the name and military service in honor or in memory of a veteran.
